Meet Our Elephants ~ This slide show will give you a brief introduction to all our Girls. Please take a moment to "meet" them, then complete the form below to sponsor "your" Girl.

The Elephant Sanctuary is the first natural habitat refuge for rescued Asian and African elephants in the United States! Since The Elephant Sanctuary began ten years ago, our success—our uniqueness— has made us a hope for freedom for elephants currently working in the United States who may be outliving their usefulness.

Consider for one moment the fate of circus-performing elephants or even those you have seen at a nearby zoo. When years of captivity finally wear on a performing elephant's nerves and there is an "incident", or when a petting zoo or community zoo can no longer afford to make the facility improvements necessary to ensurethe elephants' mental and physical health, many of these animals end their days in the most miserable conditions.

Right now we know of many additional elephants who are in desperate need of our Sanctuary. We can expand our Sanctuary. We have the staff and expertise. What we don't have is the funds to build barn space to care for all these additional elephants.

Consider the food alone for our elephants—more than two tons of meals each day! Plus, just like human beings, as these animals age, their medical needs increase.

But with your help we can give these needy animals a truly special gift: their freedom.

Because of you, they will get to forage in pastures and woods, to bathe in ponds and streams, to heal their injured bodies and spirits— in short, to experience the simple lives they were meant to live.

Because The Elephant Sanctuary is a non-profit organization that receives no state or federal funding, we rely almost entirely on private contributions from animal lovers like you who share our feeling that these intelligent creatures are as deserving of freedom as all living creatures, animal and human, are. (Some would say that after so many years of performing and entertaining people under harsh conditions, they are even more deserving!)

That is why I am asking you to become part of our elephant Sanctuary family. I know that for many of you it is not practical for you to participate in volunteer days at the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, but there is another way you can "volunteer" and play an important role.

You can sponsor one of the elephants at the Sanctuary: Tarra, Shirley, Bunny, Sissy, Winkie, Dulary, Tange, Flora, Minnie, Lottie, Liz, Debbie, Ronnie, Billie, Frieda or Misty.

Beyond helping one of the "girls", your support will have a bonus effect. Your gift will enable us to link our refuge with universities, students and scholars who want to understand and study these magnificent animals for the betterment of their world—and hopefully, ours, too.
